This Halloween pumpkin craft for kids is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, homeschool, Halloween parties, or a fun activity at home. With printable templates and just a few basic supplies, kids can make their own colorful peek-a-boo pumpkin.

What You Need

  • Printable peek-a-boo pumpkin surprise templates
  • White A4 paper or cardstock
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • Markers
  • Child-safe scissors

You can also use oil pastels if children prefer them for coloring.

How to Make a Peek-a-Boo Pumpkin Surprise Craft

1. Choose a Pumpkin Surprise Template

  • Choose the printable pumpkin surprise template you would like to make and print it on a white sheet of paper.
  • There are different surprise pictures to choose from, so children can pick their favorite design.

2. Color the Pumpkin

  • Use crayons, colored pencils, or markers to color the pumpkin.
  • Orange is a great choice for the pumpkin, while purple, black, green, and yellow can be used for the witch hat and other Halloween details.
  • Kids can also choose their own colors to make a unique pumpkin.

3. Color the Surprise Picture

  • Don't forget to color the hidden surprise picture inside the pumpkin.
  • Use bright Halloween colors and carefully color all the little details before folding the craft.

4. Cut Out the Craft

  • Once the coloring is finished, carefully cut around the outside outline of the whole craft.
  • Separate the finished craft from the rest of the paper, but do not cut along the dashed fold lines.

5. Make the First Fold

  • Find the top dashed line across the pumpkin.
  • Carefully fold the paper along this dashed line. Press along the fold with your fingers to make a neat crease.

6. Make the Second Fold

  • Bring the folded section down until the top dashed line meets the bottom dashed line.
  • Fold and crease the paper carefully. This brings the two pumpkin sections together and makes the pumpkin look complete when closed.

7. Close the Pumpkin

  • When you fold the paper correctly, the top and bottom parts of the pumpkin will come together to create a complete jack-o'-lantern face.
  • The surprise picture will stay hidden inside.

8. Open the Pumpkin Surprise

  • Now gently unfold the pumpkin.
  • As the paper opens, the hidden Halloween picture appears between the two pumpkin sections.
  • Fold it closed again to hide the surprise, then open it to reveal the picture. Kids can enjoy opening and closing their peek-a-boo pumpkin again and again.
