Why This Counting Activity is Great for Kids?
Helps kids recognize numbers:
In this Counting Activity, the numbers 0-10 are clearly and widely visible. That is, each cupcake on each page has one number. So, give the children the opportunity to identify the number by showing them pictures of those numbers. Let them identify and name the numbers separately. Furthermore, seeing numbers repeatedly through such activities improves their memory.
Encourages counting skills:
Counting can be quite challenging for children. So with activities like this that spark children’s interest, children can easily do that challenge. So, this is a great activity to encourage counting. The other thing is that this gives children the opportunity to count in a fun way and to count more accurately and easily.
Develops fine motor skills:
Counting is not just about recognizing numbers. This counting activity helps children develop many skills. One of them is helping children develop their fine motor skills. That is, in this activity, children have to perform fine motor activities such as coloring, counting dots, selecting objects, and placing objects on the dots. These movements help children perform finger movements correctly. It is a development of fine motor skills in them.
Uses colorful and fun materials:
There are several things to consider when planning activities for preschoolers. Among them, the counting activity should be colorful and child-friendly. Here, we have given the children the opportunity to color a simple picture text. Furthermore, the theme is children’s favorite cupcakes. And tools that children can have fun handling, such as pom pom balls, are also used to carry out this activity.
Perfect for home and classroom learning:
This activity is a home activity to practice counting. It is also designed to be easy and simple. And with this blog post, we will give you all the instructions to successfully complete the activity. So you can easily do this activity at home. If you are a school teacher, this is also suitable for the children in your school.
Materials You Need:
- Printable cupcake templates with numbers.
- Small objects for counting (pom-poms, beads, buttons, or cotton balls).
- A flat surface to set up the activity.
How to Do the Cupcake Counting Activity?:
Step 1: Print cupcake Templates
First, print out the 10 cupcake templates with numbers and dots that we have provided. You can use white or colored paper when printing. But if you are coloring these cupcakes, don’t forget to use white printing paper. In addition, all these templates are designed for A4 size.
Step 2: Color the cupcakes
If you printed these cupcake coloring pages, you don’t need to color them. However, if you printed these cupcakes on white paper, you can color them to make them look more attractive. It will also be a great opportunity for children to develop their skills. Using different colors, color the numbers and dots on the cupcakes without covering them.
Step 2: Cut out the cupcake shape and stick it on the cardboard.
Skip this step if you don’t want to, but it can make your activities more engaging for children.
Cut out cupcake shapes from the templates you colored. Then stick them on cardboard and cut them out again to make the cupcake shape. Gluing it to a piece of cardboard makes it more durable and sturdier. Additionally, it makes it easier for children to do the activities and reduces the risk of the templates tearing, getting wet, or being dragged around.
Step 2: Gather Counting Objects
Give your child small objects like pom-poms or buttons to use as “sprinkles” for the cupcakes.
You can also use other objects for this. Make sure they are safe for children. You can also use paper balls, stickers, seeds, etc. Use an object that is easily available to you.
Step 3: Match the Numbers
Tell your child to place the correct number of objects on each cupcake. For example, if the cupcake has the number 4 on it, instruct them to place 4 pom poms on the 4 dots on top of the cupcake.
Step 4: Count and Check
Encourage your child to count out loud as they place each item. This helps reinforce number learning.
Step 5: Play and Repeat
Once done, mix up the cupcakes and let them try again!
Fun Variations to Try
🔹 Color Matching: You can keep several things in mind when using colors. For example, you can use one color for each number. If you let the children color, color the bottom or top of the cupcake with different colors. You can color one part of the cupcake a single color, or you can let the kids color the cupcakes according to their preferences.
🔹 Number Tracing: Before counting using objects, let children count the numbers. This can be done using their fingertips or a small stick. Ask them if the dots and numbers match.
🔹 Speed Challenge: You can check the speed at which the children do this activity. This will help you see how well the children have mastered counting. So, let them count different numbers at the same time using objects, and also check their speed.
