But let’s be honest—sometimes numbers can look a little boring to young kids if they are only taught through books or worksheets. That is why we created a special “Happy Numbers” activity to make number learning more exciting, creative, and fun.
This activity is not only about counting or recognizing numbers. It also combines art, craft, creativity, and play. The idea is simple: we designed 10 number templates (0–9) with big cute eyes, ready for kids to bring to life. Children will decorate these numbers using tissue paper squares, glue, coloring, and sticks to create their very own Happy Number Puppets.
By the end of this activity, kids will not only know their numbers better, but they will also have a set of cheerful puppet friends to use in play and learning. Let’s dive into the details of this fun project!
What You Need
To get started, you only need a few simple supplies:
- Happy Numbers Templates (0–9, already designed with cute eyes)
- Tissue paper in different colors (cut into small squares)
- Glue stick or liquid glue
- Child-safe scissors
- Markers or crayons (to draw smiles and details)
- Craft sticks or straws (to make number puppets)
- Tape (to attach sticks)
All of these items are easy to find at home or in the classroom, which makes this project budget-friendly and stress-free.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here’s how kids can create their Happy Numbers:
1. Cut Out the Numbers
Print the templates on A4 paper. Each page has a large number outline with space to decorate. Kids cut out the number shapes carefully. This step builds fine motor skills as children practice scissor control.
2. Decorate with Tissue Paper
Give each child small squares of tissue paper in many colors. Kids can scrunch, fold, or crumple the pieces before gluing them inside the number outline. This creates a textured, colorful look.
Tip: Encourage children to choose a different color scheme for each number. For example, number 2 can be green, number 4 can be yellow, and so on.
3. Add Cute Eyes
The templates already include fun eye shapes. Kids cut out the eyes and glue them on top of the number. Suddenly, the number looks alive and friendly!
4. Draw a Smiling Mouth
Using crayons or markers, kids add a smile (or even silly expressions). This step gives each number its own personality.
5. Make the Puppet
Finally, kids cut out the decorated number completely, then tape or glue a craft stick to the back. Now the number is ready to be used as a puppet.
