Today, we bring you a wonderful activity that children can do with their favorite sweets. It’s a candy sorting game. Through this activity, children can learn to select, sort, and file items by shape, category, or color. This activity is perfect for developing basic math concepts in young children. Not only that, it’s also a great opportunity to improve children’s fine motor skills and critical thinking.
What you need for this activity:
01. Printed templates
02. Scissors
03. Glue
04. Colored paper (for printing)
05. Pencils/markers (if you are printing on white paper)
How to do this Activity:
01. Download and Print:
We have provided the necessary templates for this candy sorting activity. You can download them and print them. We’ve included both black-and-white images and colored images. You can use them as you wish. For example:
- You can print black-and-white images on white paper to create a coloring activity for children.
- Or print black-and-white images on colored paper to cut and paste.
- Otherwise, simply print the colored images.
02. Color the templates:
If you print the black-and-white images on white paper, children can color them beautifully. Use pencils, markers, or colored pencils to color them.
03. Cut out the images:
Then, you can cut out the printed images separately. Here, you have to cut out different types of candies and jar images.
04. Arrange the jars:
Now, get the jar images and arrange them in a line on the table.
05. Mix the candy images:
Take all the cut-out different types of candies and mix them well. Gather them in a small container.
06. Select, sort, and file the candy images:
Then guide the kids to select the candies and sort them according to the candy type and file them in the jars. Then paste candies on the jar image.
Ways to Use This Sorting Game:
01. Sort with Jar Colors:
I’ve provided colored jars for kids to sort candies according to color. Examples:
- You can say, “Select the candy you like most and paste it on the yellow jar.”
- “Select the blue-colored candy type and paste it on the blue jar.”
- “Select the candy corn and paste it on the orange jar.”
- “Select 5 toffees and paste them on the red jar.”
- “Select the circle-shaped candies and paste them on the green jar.”
02. Sort with Candy Types:
We’ve included different shapes, colors, and types of candies to make sorting easy for kids. You can guide them with examples like:
- “Select the candy corn and paste it on the yellow jar.”
- “Select the jelly beans and paste them on the 4th jar.” (You can write the number on the jar lid.)
- “Select 5 candy canes and paste them on your desired jar.”
- “Select the gummy bear candy and paste it on the matching color jar.”
- “Select the cotton candies and paste them on the last jar.”
03. Sort with Candy Shape:
Kids can identify different candy shapes in this activity. Use these shapes for sorting in the following ways:
- “Select the circle-shaped or coin-shaped candies and paste them on the 1st jar.”
- “Select the triangle-shaped candy and paste it on the 2nd jar.”
- “Select the rectangle-shaped candies and paste them on the 3rd jar.”
- “Select the bear-shaped candies and paste them on the blue jar.”
- “Select the spiral-shaped candy and paste it on any empty jar.”
Like the examples above, you can create more types of guidance for kids to follow. These help children develop thinking skills, solve problems, face challenges, and build self-confidence.
Special Note:
This is a fun and sweet activity designed to help kids improve their early math skills through sorting, counting, and problem-solving. You can use it during special events like Halloween, party time, or any joyful moment kids enjoy.
Please remember to remind children that candies are treats—not healthy everyday foods. Encourage them to make healthy food choices whenever possible.
